Week 3
Week Three
'This is not a tree'
For this week, we were tasked to choose and research about a tree and make multiple different outcomes with a variety of materials and techniques. I chose the Pine Tree as my tree, as it is by far my favourite tree species put there. Between its beautiful aesthetic and structure, to its symbolism for Christmas, I think the Pine tree is the perfect pick.
For my first page, I chose to start with the simple shapes and significant pieces of a Pine tree. The needles are easily the most noticeable identifying feature, along with their pyramid-like shape, seed bearing pinecones, and their reddish-brown, or gray bark.
I chose to show these features with a mix of soft charcoal, HB pencil and a graphite pencil. These are some of the materials I am most comfortable with, so I chose these to start as a warmup, and to also give deep details to the images.
I then chose to move onto colour with water colours, focusing on softer images and colour rather than anything else.
I am considering redoing this page, to develop my ideas for it much farther than I did. I had wanted this page to be soft but with more detail and brighter/deeper colours, to experiment with what I can do with water colour.
These two pages are my least favourite as I stayed within my comfort zone rather than expressing and experimenting with materials and ideas.
For this page, I chose to use a mixture of ink pens, ink and a toothpick, a brush pen and a biro. I chose to push my comfort zone with this page and not care for everything being perfect, instead experimenting and having fun with the different materials used.
I love how this page turned out, with the smaller details to the messier, fun pieces. I also really like how the colours and baubles turned out, although they do look alike fruit or berries.
This page is by far my favourite, with the multiple different colours and techniques used. I used only acrylic paints for this page, playing with watering the paints down and layering it all to give a 3d effect.
I would like to add more to these pages, like collage or prints once I have the materials for the exercises.
