Week Two

Week two

'Cathedral'

Part 1

In the first few tasks, we were asked to create multiple different works based on a cathedral, using three mark making techniques we used on our sheets last week, and with no reference photos to help us.

Putting all of these pieces in order of creation, I can definitely see the growth in confidence as I tried more materials and enjoyed creating rather than worrying if my work would be accurate or not. Having not been in a Cathedral for a long time, I found this task difficult without reference photos. However, I quickly began warming up as I allowed myself freedom to create rather than being picky and precious with my work. I like my last three pages, as one shows a deeper, potentially spiritual symbolism, whilst the other two were loose and fun to create and look at compared to the first two. In my mind, cathedrals are very beautifully created architecture, as I am not religious it doesn't mean to me much in any other way, so if I were to do this task again, I would emphasize the beauty of the buildings rather than the picky parts.

For my last idea with this task, I decided to create a 3D paper 'sculpture' of a what I could imagine a cathedral to look like (if simplified). I loved creating this, it satisfying my need to be precise whilst also being very crafty. I created this with small amounts of double-sided tape and specifically placed slits in the paper, to slot each piece together tightly.

All of the highlighted areas on this image show the slits I created to allow all of the paper to overlap and create the 3D effect, without being bulky or messy. Although very tedious to do, I think it was worth the extra work as it created the intended look. As seen on the other photos below, you can also see this technique stopped the overlapping paper being very obvious when placed on a light box and photographed.

The photos below show me playing with different lightings and ideas for paper. In the end, I decided on the warm yellow lights with paper behind to keep all of the pieces together safely. If I were to develop this in the future, I would play with coloured cellophane sheets for the windows, to create the stain glass window effect.

Part 2

In the second half, we were given a list of words and told to choose four. We had to fill an A2 sheet of paper with four drawings interpreting one of these words, using different mark making techniques for each one. I chose the words: Tiger, Storm, Forest and Elephant. The Forest and Elephant pages I did on Procreate, marking each individual 'brush' I used on each section.
