Mark Making

For my first mark making sheet, I used a HB pencil to create as many marks as I could think of. I began very precious and unsure; I naturally try and keep my art neat and as tidy as I can, so I really had to push myself out of my comfort zone. In my second sheet, I found more confidence whilst using a graphite pencil and charcoal, even with my strong dislike to charcoal. I enjoyed created dotted marks and scraping the charcoal across the page, smudging it to see the effects. This confidence only grew as I used paints/inks, enjoying switching between a dry and wet brush to get multiple different effects. I specifically like the mark in the middle at the top of the page that creates a 3D effect.

For these two sheets, I used multiple different objects and materials to create a mixed media piece. For the first sheet, I enjoyed using Ink and a graphite pencil along with multiple objects (like a sponge, card, rolling pin, my hand, string etc.) I particularly like the handprints I created and the string pieces, that I created with ink dunked string being pulled along the paper. Both marks are very eye catching and detailed, with minimal effort. One mark at the bottom (the smudge with the white fingerprints on top) didn't work according to plan, and I would definitely change it if I were to do this exercise again. I had wanted to overlap a sponge dabbed mark with white painted fingerprints, but I was impatient and created a smudged mess instead, teaching me to be patient.

For my second sheet, I based the page on the theme 'nature' and went outside to get objects and scratching's to add, creating a collage effect. I loved using leaves and flowers to create different prints and markings, the prints adding alot of small details to the page. I used the same string technique as before also, creating a floral effect to add to the theme and create bolder areas. If I were to change this sheet, I would add more bold, solid marks as this sheet is very dainty and spaced apart.
